Safari 3 for Mac + PC

June 11

SafariToday, Apple released a public beta of Safari 3.0. Before the pages announcing it had fully updated, I was already downloading the browser on my beloved PowerBook and the chunky Gateway laptop I use for IE testing.

I’m not sure what’s changed under the hood, but the Mac version is about 50% snappier™ than its predecessor on my system. Previously, I could hardly watch episodes of LOST using ABC’s full episode player. Now, the quality is outstanding and the CPU load light. Handy!

On the other hand, the PC version is ultra crashy. Clicking “Bookmark,” then “Cancel” took it down. Ironically, so did trying to submit a bug report! I’m excited by the idea of Safari for Windows (or more appropriately, the demise of IE - ask any web developer), but pretty unimpressed by the implementation so far.

Update:  Safari just crashed on the Mac while I was away from my desk.  Betas are betas, but they tend to be a lot more stable than this - especially when released by serious developers.

How’s your experience with the new betas?

You’ve waited 2000 years…

I have to say – this is a strange way to break my blog silence as of late, but it’s not often that a video clip synthesizes so many of my passions. This would be perfect if only Jesus were browsing JSTOR using Safari.

Enjoy!

eBible Widget Released (Mac OS 10.4+)

April 20

Calling all Mac users: I’ve just finished coding a Dashboard Widget for eBible.com.

eBible is a cool Web 2.0 take on scripture that lets you view translations in parallel, verse-by-verse commentaries, and a ton of premium resources, too.

I’ve been a beta tester for about a year. Their commentaries don’t quite suit my tastes and there are no lexical tools yet, but I’m hoping more are in the works.

Now, without further ado…

eBible Widget by C. Scott Andreas
get it now!

This is the very first release (0.1) and there are certainly bugs. By using this widget, you agree not to hold me or Phoreo, LLC responsible for any incidental damages - yada yada yada. Here are a couple issues that I know of:

  1. It’s a bit ugly.
  2. “Study” and “Read More” links don’t work.
  3. Search queries flash briefly before displaying results.
  4. The widget does not function when off-line (of course).

Don’t have a Mac but want to try it out? Click here.

iPhone

January 10

iPhoneBy now, you all know that Steve Jobs brought the world tidings of great joy this morning when he announced the iPhone. iPhone is set to revolutionize human communication come June, and I’ll be drooling until then (though I may not get my hands on one for much longer, depending…). Seriously, the company has cornered genius.

Anyhow, check it out if you haven’t yet, and do watch the Macworld Keynote. Jobs knows how to give a presentation. Amusingly enough, the Cingular guy did not.

I hit my “idolatry” quota hours ago. I need to put that silver half-eaten fruit out of my mind for a bit.
