I came across this quote in Shane Claiborne’s “The Irresistible Revolution.” It represents a beautiful component of the Gospel which too often escapes my mind. Also, a good desktop background. Click for a larger version (1280×1024).
This makes me think of the idea of judgment. Judgment is the triumph of justice, which is obviously a good thing for the oppressed. And while it is something to be feared (to be sure), it is also a good thing for the oppressor. Both the oppressed and the oppressor finds true freedom only in the triumph of justice. You can’t have salvation without judgment. Rather, as Brian McLaren says in Generous Orthodoxy, “salvation is what happens when we experience both judgment and forgiveness”.
