think globally, eat locally

July 31

After watching a documentary called The End of Suburbia, I committed to become a member of Bloomingfoods, a local organic food co-op. This morning, Holly invited me to bike to the Portland Farmers’ Market. I had no idea what to expect.

PDX Farmers' Market

The market gathers every Saturday from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm on the Portland State University campus in downtown Portland. I was first impressed by its size - they filled a commons area the size of Dunn Meadow (for the Bloomingtonians); it was comparable to a fair.

But then I tried a farm-fresh, locally-grown, organic peach. I’m not sure I can eat peaches from the grocery store any more. That said, I’m looking forward to a year of Bloomingfoods. Anyone care to join me?

    scott,
that is wonderful to hear! i tried to do some research to find some local CSA’s around Newport News, Va. I didn’t have much luck though, even though Va is still a very agricultural state. I found one CSA slightly nearby and sent them an e-mail, asking if they delivered the food and never heard back from them. Until then, my friend Bekah suggested going to farmer’s markets near where she lives. The only problem is that it is a little bit of a drive to get there. Do you think that’d be worth the cause, or be a proponent of too much oil being used?

I have yet to see End of Suburbia. I saw the preview and was quite riveted by it. The things pointed out just in the preview and clips I watched, I could make sense of perfectly just from my own experience of seeing so many resources wasted in northern va suburbia.

It just made way too much sense.
