letters to the president (1)
July 29Saturday, July 29, 2006.
President Bush:
Greetings.
I’m writing to humbly request that your administration adopt a consistent ethic of Life and Justice.
Recently, you exercised your veto power for the first time to strike down a bill supporting stem cell research on unviable embryos which are currently discarded. This research could very well offer us new treatments for diseases such as AIDS and several cancers, potentially saving thousands of lives and countless suffering in the lives of our families and friends.
This bill received bi-partisan support and was passed by the senators and congressmen and women whom we have chosen to represent us.
These embryos are not “destroyed” in the research process - they represent thousands of cells yearning to become something beautiful and life-giving. Your policy discards them as medical waste. Yet this research could result in a tremendous victory for Life.
Medical researchers and scientists are more than willing to take on this endeavor. And the afflicted are crying out in hope for life and justice.
Will you not hear?
Hopefully yours,
c. scott andreas

I find this all too interesting. I read about the President’s veto and it put my emotions in an immediate rage. I then had to calm myself down and make myself think about it reasonably, since I knew very little about the bill being passed in the first place. All I knew is that it further would prevent my brother from walking again.
I was curious to see how my family reacted. So I called them as soon as I returned from the office. My family tends to be more liberal when it comes to things like stem cell research. I talk to my brother on the phone and asking him what he thought. He said he was glad that the bill passed, that he would hate to encourage the abortion of embryos for the sake of himself. Not knowing a thing about the bill, I couldn’t argue anything differently. I told him though that it was pushed through a bi-partisan effort. And they quoted a pro-life republican in the article i read for the bill. He replied that this “pro-life” guy must not have very good christian ethics. My family says the bill would encourage research where embryos would be harmed. My brother further exclaimed that my dad clapped when Bush vetoed the bill. My family is not even always happy with Bush.
I have yet to find the adequate time to do research on what this bill is actually pushing for research for, but I would not like to see embyos aborted just for the sake of research, as my brother indicated it would.
Is there anything you could show me, off-hand, that shows the bill isn’t for this?
